Something in the Water

Send it to Congress

The country is in an uproar over the poisoned water in Flint, Michigan. The FBI has been called in. A Congressional hearing with bipartisan support is underway to investigate what went wrong. But a few weeks back, as news broke of Flint’s water crisis, Congress didn’t hesitate to pass a bill sponsored by Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) that would prevent the EPA from doing its job: caring for America’s waterways.

President Obama vetoed the resolution and wrote, “As I have noted before, too many of our waters have been left vulnerable. Pollution from upstream sources ends up in the rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and coastal waters near which most Americans live and on which they depend for their drinking water, recreation, and economic development. Clarifying the scope of the Clean Water Act helps to protect these resources and safeguard public health.”

That Congress could act to undermine access to clean water just as images of Flint’s brown tap water were blanketing the news is unforgivable.
