Cuba

“Scene of Batista’s revolution”
“Fidel Castro’s land”
“Scene of revolution”
“Yanqui’s problem”
“Place in the headlines”
“OAS problem”

These are a variety of clues for CUBA that ran in New York Times crosswords during the middle of the 20th century.

More recently, 17-, 40- and 60-Across also appeared as crossword clues in the Times for the country 1-Across visited this week. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) criticized the visit, insisting it ignored “American values.” Senator Menendez’s view is about as tired as a pre-1959 crossword puzzle.
